Brett Favre, in my opinion, is just a guy who loves the game of football and doesn't want to give it up.  He has such a passion for the game.  I respect that he continues to strive to improve, to push himself to the limits, to succeed when everyone around him seems to say he's going to fail.

I like Brett Favre...as a Packer...as a Jet...as a Viking.  But looking at more than the game of football, I can learn a thing or two from Favre.

I need to learn to be more like Brett...push myself to the limits.  With my work, with my home, with my relationships.  I need to strive, each day to improve, to grow.

My sister-in-law will turn 50 next week.  The procrastinator that I am, I've not gotten a gift yet.

I want to get something fun and really great, but for $100 or less.  Does such a fabulous gift exist???

Well, dear LJ friends.  Give me your ideas.  So far, I've thought of a spa gift certificate or some yoga stuff (she would like it).

Ready, Set, GO!!!!

If you are on FB these will not be new to you, but I wanted to post them here for archiving purposes.  2 Finished Projects.

I thought I would actually record a finished project here.  This is a bed quilt I made for my daughter, Jen.  She has it on her bed in her dorm...hopefully gives her a piece of home in her everyday.  The pattern is called "And All That Jazz" from an Evelyn Sloppey book and I made it using all brightly colored batiks (my fav fabric).  It is professionally quilted using a popcorn pattern.

This is a baby quilt I made for a co-worker.  It is the "Yellow Brick Road" pattern made with bright colored moda fabric.  It is also professionally quilted using a dragonfly pattern.

It's not going to be Tax Day for me...I am declaring April 15 Pay It Forward day!

Personally, I will be paying for the person behind me at Starbucks tomorrow morning.  Why should Tax Day be a negative?

Will you join me in finding a way to Pay it Forward?

Easter

Easter was nice in the morning, we were all preparing food and singing to the music (80's music) and laughing.  As the day wore on it got more and more stressful.  My grandkids were quite rambunctious and the littlest one whined all through dinner.  My SIL was cranky and is annoyed with my daughter, who acted like a total brat after everyone was gone.  She really can be stubborn and pig headed and rude at times.  We never had these typical teenager issues when she was in high school.  Now that she's been on her own a bit at college she's become somewhat of a bitch. (I feel terrible even saying this about her, but it's true)  I can't even talk with her about it because she gets angry and stops talking.  What the heck is going on???  I have to listen to my SIL 's attitude about my daughter and my daughter's attitude about my SIL and pretty much everything in general and try to not be trapped in the middle.  It's like I live in Critical Village.

Oy Vey.

Well, here's hoping the next holiday will be a peaceful, happy, loving, calm one.  :)

Well, today marks the 9th anniversary of my mom's death.  There are times it feels like forever ago and times, like this morning, that it feels like today.

Amazingly enough, right around 8:30 this morning I felt weepy...for no reason....and then I realized that it was just about the time my mom died...9 years ago this morning.

I always dread the month of April (despite it being the month of my birthday) and am glad when we get to May.

I still miss you mom and think of you every day.

Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain!

3.31.09 - Spread the Word to End the Word....

So often I hear my daughter's friends and others using the word "retard" to describe a number of things or people.  Often they don't use it to be mean or hateful, but what they don't realize is that for someone with a disability, who knows the word has, in the past, been used to describe them, it *is* hurtful, negative and derogatory.  Maybe you use the word too.  I would encourage you to choose a different word.  To realize the power behind the words you speak and to use words that offer respect and dignity.

Today has been declared, by Special Olympics, as a day to bring awareness to the fact that the r-word is offensive and hurtful.

Won't you join me in pledging to end the use of the r-word?  www.r-word.org

If you have an extra 10 minutes today these are both great to watch.

Phoenix...

So I've mentioned before how much I dislike flying.  Imagine my glee when the captain announces this morning, on my flight to Phoenix, that we will be delayed for just a bit due to mechanical issues but he felt it would be taken care of quickly.

We left about 10 mintues later.  Is that really enough time to repair mecahnical problems???  So - turbulance city!!!  We had the seat belt light off for maybe 15 minutes of the 4 hour flight.  My co-worker kept looking at me to see my reactions...I literally almost lost my book out of my hand once the jerk was so severe...But...I'm here in Phoenix.

BTW - it's raining on and off and is colder than in Chicago!  But, I got to visit the college I'm attending online and see that it actually exists so that was a bonus!
just_karyn: (Default)
I have to select a partner in Spanish class (totally online) to work on a project together.  Only, every single person I've emailed to ask if they would like to be partners is already taken.

It's like when I was a kid standing against the wall in the gym, waiting for one of the team captains to pick me for their team...only they didn't, I was always one of the last picked.  What can I say, I'm not athletic.

Didn't realize how quickly those emotions of my 10 year old awkward self could return....at the age of 42!

Remember my post about the lack of help and assistance my hubby sometimes provides?

Well, I take it all back...at least for today.

I'm upstairs doing my Spanish homework...no me gusta!

We're having a super bowl party in 4 1/2 short hours.  I spent all of yesterday shopping for the party and doing a paper for my marketing class.

So today - my hubby made breakfast (yum, Swedish pancakes) and is now dusting and vacuuming so I can study until the time of the party.  My SIL is downstairs making brownies and chili for the party and did all of the dishes from breakfast.

And - my hubby has a cd on and is singing like there is no tomorrow and he has a GREAT voice!!!  My nieces said this morning at breakfast (they slept over) that he should be on American Idol...I told them he is TOO old for that.  (They're 8 & 6)!!

Anyway - today makes me smile and I love my family!!!

just_karyn: (Default)

1. I've been married almost 22 years, have 2 step-sons, 2 daughter-in-laws, 3 grandchildren and a daughter in college.

2. I have traveled across almost every state in the nation via car. As a kid/teen, every vacation was a car trip...usually camping along the way. While I didn't appreciate it then, I am thankful for those experiences and time together now.

3. I have walked a portion of the Great Wall of China, visited Hong Kong, spent 2 1/2 months living in a tent on the side of a mountain in the Philippines and have walked the beach in Mexico.

4. While I used to love to fly...now, I'm scared to death. I do it, but I don't like it.

5. I love Bon Jovi...but only discovered I love them about 5 years ago. I was missing out in the late 80's I guess!

6. I love TiVo and have 4 in our house!!

7. We rarely watch TV, when we do it's usually the Weather Channel...unless it's Dancing with the Stars, Samantha Who, Jon & Kate +8 or 24!!! I haven’t watched a commercial in forever!

8. I’m a total procrastinator and find that I actually do my best work at the last minute…for real!

9.  I love the smell of campfire and miss not having a fireplace in our home.

10. I am finally completing my bachelor’s degree (only 25 yrs late) and will graduate in June ’09. Further proof of my procrastination! J

11. I make a wicked peppermint hot chocolate.

12. I saw The Color Purple on Broadway the week it came out with a bunch of girlfriends. We spent a wonderful 4 days in New York and stayed at the Ritz Carlton! It was posh!

13.  I learned to snow ski when I was 13 and skied every winter until I graduated high school. I haven’t skied since.

14. I went water skiing once…it didn’t end well. ‘Nuff said.

15. I LOVE Football…the crash of the helmets and all!

16. I took Tennis lessons 3 yrs ago and haven’t played since, but really liked it.

17. I am completely addicted to Starbucks, especially the Chai Tea Lattes.

19. If I forget to wear my watch I feel naked all day long.

20. Someday I want to be able to play the piano.

21. My mom died almost 9 years ago. There are many days I wish I could ask her various questions.

22. My grandma was completely blind the latter years of her life, due to diabetes. I used to try to “trick” her to determine if she could really see…I was a kid!!

23. I like to quilt…I’m sure that’s one you wouldn’t have thought. I enjoy a weekend quilting retreat with some friends once each year and bi-monthly get-togethers for a day long quilting.

24.  I am a sucker for a romantic comedy movie…any romantic comedy!

25.  I have pierced ears, but haven’t worn earrings in 5 months! 2 holes in each ear, I wonder if they’re closed? I’ll have to try it out soon.

I was just reading and found myself squinting and my head starting to hurt...I got up to take a break for a moment, came back and continued more of the same.

Then I realized my reading glasses are on top of my head!

Duh!!  They work better if I wear them in front of my eyes!!!  :)

What I've learned after 21 years of marriage...
  1. Hubby says he will take his belongings to their rightful spot, but in reality, he will leave them just where he left them for me to pick up and put away.
  2. Hubby will  begin and finish projects, but the clean up part gets missed somehow.
  3. Hubby doesn't understand that helping clean up from dinner isn't complete by just putting the dishes in the sink and pushing in the chairs.
  4. Hubby doesn't understand that separating clothes for the laundry based on item likeness isn't the way to go.  It isn't pants with pants, shirts with shirts, etc.  It is lights, colors, whites, etc.
  5. Hubby doesn't understand that removing the dust from the tv viewing area is more important than tweaking the stereo surround sound wires.
It may sound as though I'm complaing, but really I'm not...well, just a little tiny bit...   My hubby doesn't think he does any of these things, but he does them all...but, boy, look at his garage...usually everything in its place and swept up!!!

I got to thinking about this after I had handed him his shoes to put away and then found them in front of the pantry cabinet in the kitchen.  ADD anyone???  :)
just_karyn: (Jack Bauer - 24)
I'm upstairs doing homework.  Joe is downstairs installing a surround sound system on our tv...we realized how sucky our sound was last week during 24.

A couple of minutes ago he scared the heck out of me as I thought there was a 747 landing in my family room!!  He had it at full sound to "test" it...yeah right!  WOW...24 this week will be awesome!!!

Homework?  No me gusta!!!  I HATE my Spanish class...and have seriously thought about paying someone to do my homework...no, I won't actually do that...but it sure is tempting!!

In other news, I will be in Phoenix, AZ in 19 days for work!!!!   My co-worker and I have been invited to give a presentation at a workshop with regards to the duck race we put on each year here in Chicago.

WOOT!!!...leaving behind the frigid cold for 3 days of sunny warmth!!!!  Can't wait!

Back to the grindstone!

I can't believe how little I worked at work this week.
  1. I was sick last Friday and again on Monday...yes, really sick.  I did visit the dr. twice and got 2 different antibiotics.
  2. I worked Tuesday all day.
  3. Wednesday we had snow and after trying to get to work for over an hour I turned around and came home and worked from home...for about a half day.
  4. Thursday I went to work and got there just in time to see an email stating that due to the sub-zero temps we were closed.
  5. Today I checked the email first and event though it was COLDER than yesterday, we were open so I trudged to work...but our heat was not working and the temp kept dropping so our CEO declared our office closed.  I went to lunch with some co-workers where we did actually do some brainstorming and note taking and I'm considering it work...we left the restaurant at 2 and I went home.
So, next week??
  1. Monday is MLK day and we are OFF!!!
What a great start to the week!

Although, I then have meetings almost every day, so I think I might have to step it up and do some work...actually lots of work since I have sluffed (sp) off this week.  I have an intense February coming up to make up for the fluff week!

TOMORROW:  The American Girl store with my SIL and 2 nieces!!!  They are getting their first dolls, it should be fun.  We're taking the train downtown and going to lunch and Water Tower place (where the AG store is)....Yay!!
just_karyn: (Winter)
I had every intention of going to work today, really I did.  Upon hearing the impending news of a huge snowstorm heading our way I filled my little Lola (my car) up with gas and was ready for today.

This morning I woke with a golf ball in my throat...no really!  OK, it just felt like one.  Since I had gone to the dr. yesterday and got antibiotics and had only taken 1 dose, I figured today is a good day to stay home and enjoy the warmth and rest.

I did get a work email that the office is ordering Thai for lunch so I emailed my request over for some ginger chicken with instructions to deliver to my home.  One can dream, right?!  Guess it will be mac n' cheese or something equally lovely for lunch instead!

I have a ton of work to do, but somehow when my throat hurts my brain stops working.  Go figure!

I am off to read a book and if I really get motivated, I want to post some pictures of some projects I have been working on.  I made an Amy Butler purse and have almost finished 2 quilts.  They have already been quilted and just need the binding. YAY!  I am also going to finish 2 pillows for Jen to take back to school for her futon.  Must finish tonight or tomorrow as she leaves on Sunday.

Ciao for now!!!
